Confessions of a game store clerk

Here's a link to some interviews that are along the same line of DITLOVG. I can agree with pretty much all that the interviewees said, and I'm now very thankful that we are a mom&pop operated store and don't have to answer to corporate.

Hmm... interesting read. There's a lot of truth to that article, but I feel a lot of the complaints are retailed based.

I use to work retail a good part of my younger years before going onto corporate. I paid my dues and took care of business, and never once did I have such negative attitudes toward my work. I think a lot of people are putting too much emphasis on the "me" than the "job" part of retail, and that's what makes it a horrible experience. Retail workers are drones (I was one, I know) and you have to have the attitude that you're working simply because you're getting a check and slightly building a resume. You can't possibly think that someone important is watching you and taking notice; it doesn't work out that way. I know people who work at the local flea-markets who make considerably more money than career people, but they deal with the worst in the world every day. They also have no references, and if they ever decide to join "the workforce", their resume makes them look like some type of shady door-to-door salesman.

All the video game comments and responses in the interview is spot on; it's exactly the correct responses to anyone who enjoys video games. But you could replace the theme of video games with another popular hobby, and it's the same exact thing with the same drama and problems. None the less, I love the part about the customers because I see it everyday and things haven't changed one bit all these years later.

Game store employees are completely expendable. The company knows that there are at least a dozen kids dreaming about working there for every current employee. They don't make the effort to know you, or even back you on anything. They always assume the worst, whether it comes from another employee, or an outside source. I was fired, but it was the best thing that ever happened to me while I was working there. The store burns you out.
